A BLOATED CELEBRATION: MUST LIFES BE LOST?

The presidential election has come and gone, but the outcome is still there with us. I am concerned with the mannerism of celebration which is wild, unthoughtful and belated. For the records, I am not against celebrations, nor am I against loud celebrations, but any celebration which costs the lives of Nigerians is not worth celebrating.

After the announcement of the results by the Jega-led Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), there was wild jubilation all over Nigeria, especially in the Northern Part of Nigeria and APC controlled states. Yes, there got to be celebrations! But, a situation whereby scores of Nigerians have to lose their lives in celebrating just a win in an election is seriously uncalled for. It should be resisted with vehemence. The lives of Nigerians are worth more than dying-in-celebration.

The problem with this trend of celebration when a party wins an election is that after two or three years of the party bring in power, the people discover that the new administration has nothing or little to offer and as such, they start clamoring for change. This was the case when Buhari overthrew Shagari, when Abacha died and at every change of government in Nigeria.

My point here is that the celebration should be with caution! We must wait and see the achievements of a new government before we roll our drums. This will save us the pains and the strength of clamoring for change midway into the tenure of the government and save precious lives!!!

I still insist that Nigerian lives are precious and not worth ending unnecessarily, no matter what!!!
